Who We Are
“Empowering Women in Artisanal Gold Mining to Shape a Responsible Mining Future”
Women in Mining Kenya (WIM Kenya) works to build a visible, inclusive, and sustainable artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector by centering women’s leadership, safety, and economic participation.
We empower women artisanal gold miners through data-driven interventions, technical capacity building, access to finance, and clean gold processing innovations. Our work addresses the structural barriers that exclude women from formal gold value chains by supporting the formalization of women-led cooperatives, strengthening occupational health and safety practices, and advancing mercury-free and mercury-reducing technologies.
Through continuous capacity building, research, and innovation, WIM Kenya improves incomes, reduces health and environmental risks, and strengthens women’s leadership across the ASGM sector. By combining community-rooted solutions with evidence-based approaches, we enable women artisanal gold miners to actively lead Kenya’s transition toward responsible, environmentally sustainable, and inclusive gold mining, in alignment with national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
